Using Photoshop Filters in PageMaker 6

by Fred Ward <fward@EROLS.COM> and Peter C.S. Adams <adamsp@umbsky.cc.umb.edu>

Some of you I know are using Photoshop filters already. The Gallery Effects filters that ship with PageMaker 6 are just fine. But certainly if you have Photoshop or have access to the many public domain or shareware filters available for Photoshop, then you may want to enjoy a much wider selection by easily accessing the Photoshop filters without having to copy them to PageMaker. You do not have to have Photoshop open, or even own Photoshop. And you have all the filter controls you normally have in Photoshop, greatly increasing your control over images, b/w or color.

If you bring in all the Photoshop filters and copy them to your PageMaker folder, you will unnecessarily consume a great deal of disk space. Do this instead:

(Note: in Windows 95, aliases are called Shortcuts, and in Windows 3.1, folders are called Directories.)

  1. If you just have a few filters and do not use Photoshop, simply copy the Photoshop filters to the Effects folder, which is located in the Plugins folder, which is located in the RSRC folder in your main PageMaker folder.
  2. If you use Photoshop and have lots of filters, do not move them over and waste space. First move the filters that came with Pagemaker from the RSRC:Plugins:Effects folder inside Pagemaker's folder to the Plug-Ins folder inside Photoshop's folder. Make an Alias of your Photoshop plugin folder and rename this alias Effects. Now remove the Effects folder that is already in your Pagemaker Plugins folder and replace it with the Effects alias you just made.
  3. Start Pagemaker and click on an image. Under the Element dialog box you will find IMAGE and under that you have a choice and you pick Photoshop Filters. There they are. All your Photoshop filters are accessible without costing you any additional hard disk space.

That's it -- now you can use "Variations" and "Wind" to your heart's content!
